- W972541002 abstract "This chapter presents the application of Mössbauer spectroscopy to the analysis of iron ultrafine particles (UFPs) and their oxidation processes. Mössbauer spectroscopy method of analysis is used to individually observe and analyze the metallic and oxide parts of the UFPs. This effect is used to measure the electronic states and the binding state of Mössbauer atoms by determining their nuclear energy levels through the interaction between Mössbauer nuclei and the surrounding electric charges. When UFPs that include Mossbauer atoms are dispersed in a nonferrous medium, the particle properties can be determined without the interference of the medium. To elucidate the processes associated with the formation of surface oxides, UFPs are collected on polyimide films and measured their Mössbauer spectra. The samples used had been subjected to two oxidation processes. During synthesis, the UFPs are treated by an in-flight oxidation process. The UFPs are subsequently oxidized when they are removed from the synthesis equipment. Oxides are formed during both treatments. For iron UFPs with diameters of about 20 nm, the oxide phase stabilized as hypermagnetite in which both Fe2+ and Fe3+ are present. In-flight oxidation could be considered similar to the initial stage of slow oxidation. Oxides of iron UFPs resulting from slow oxidation treatment appear to depend on the initial partial pressure of the oxygen used during the oxidation treatment." @default.
