- W972642816 abstract "The study a t tempts t o i d e n t i f y important v a r i a b l e s a f f e c t i n g t h e q u a n t i t a t i v e r e l a t i o n s h i p between dispersed pol len and t h e composition of vegeta t ion surrounding two l akes i n a c o a s t a l f o r e s t of B r i t i s h Columbia. Aer ia l and f l u v i a l po l l en in f luxes were recorded approximately bi-weekly i n 22 samplers from March 15, 1977 t o September 13, 1978 a t Marion Lake, a medium-sized l ake wi th a major inflowing stream and a t Surpr i se Lake, a small enclosed basin. I n add i t ion , 25 su r face samples were analyzed from Marion Lake and 4 from Surpr ise Lake t o compare t h e r e l a t i v e pol len frequencies of t r e e s wi th percentage basa l a rea of each taxon around t h e lakes , a s est imated from about 900 sampling po in t s . A s h o r t sediment core (0.50 m) was analyzed from Marion Lake t o c a l c u l a t e an annual sedimentation r a t e of 0.32 cm yr-l, based on po l l en evidence of dated h i s t o r i c a l disturbance. Aer ia l p o l l e n i n f l u x a t both bas ins i s dominated by reg iona l ly deposi ted types such a s Alnus i n sp r ing and g rasses i n summer. These g r a i n s a r e produced mostly a t e l e v a t i o n s below t h e study a r e a and deposi ted i n q u a n t i t i e s s u f f i c i e n t t o obscure t h e a e r i a l i n f l u x from study a r e a vegeta t ion . F l u v i a l l y t r anspor ted po l l en a t Marion Lake is more r e p r e s e n t a t i v e of s tudy a r e a vege ta t ion because most stream pol len is r e c r u i t e d by stream eros ion of catchment s o i l s , t hus minimizing a e r i a l d i s p e r s a l d i f f e r e n c e s of t h e var ious po l l en types. Pol len eroded from t h e dra inage bas in make up about 80% of t h e annual stream-borne pol len load and a e r i a l deposi t ion accounts f o r t h e r e s t . Pol len s p e c t r a from l a k e su r face samples show l i t t l e v a r i a t i o n wi th in the two bas ins except i n stream influenced a r e a s where t h e deposi t ion of l a r g e r g r a i n s i s favoured. Pol len concentra t ions (g ra ins vary by f a c t o r s of 3 t o 4x wi th in Marion Lake, probably due t o t h e e f f e c t s of l a k e currents . ' A po l l en budget was ca lcu la ted f o r Marion Lake. Approximately 67% of t h e po l l en spectrum is f l u v i a l l y derived and t h e remaining 33% i s derived from t h e atmosphere. R-values for trees at Marion and Surprise Lakes are, respectively; Cupressaceclz 0.33 and 0.74, Alms 9 and ll, Tsuga heterophylla 0.38 and 0.35, Pseudotsuga 0.16 and 0.48, Pinus 36 and 30, Abies 1.4 and 2.5, Acer 0.80 and 0.30 and Betula 0.57 and 0.27. Variations in R-values are attributed to differences in pollen recruitment at the two sites and to differential corrosion and dispersion. In view of theoretical problems involved in the application of R-values for the correction of fossil pollen spectra, the major taxa were classified into three depositional groups (Regional, Extralocal and ~ocal) according to their dispersive characteristics. The representation and indicator value of each of these taxa is discussed and it is recommended that a separate pollen sum be constructed for the Extralocal group (Pseudotsuga, Tsuga heterophylla, Abies Picea, and Tsuga -9 mertensiana) to provide information on vegetation within the biogeoclimatic zone in which the depositional site is located. Problematic taxa, notably Alnus and Pinus are seriously over-represented whereas Cupressaceae representation may be altered in an unpredictable manner due to high corrosion susceptibility. All taxa in the Regional group are dispersed across zonal boundaries and are of limited indicator value. The study emphasizes the complexity of pollen recruitment in different depositional basins and points out the importance of such information for paleoecologic interpretation." @default.
