- W972741614 abstract "This chapter describes experiments concerning the role of some pituitary peptides in cardiovascular adaptation. The influence of ACTH4-10 (ACTH = corticotropin), lysine-8-vasopressin (LVP) and desglycinamide-lysine-8-vasopressin (DG-LVP) on heart rate during extinction of a classically conditioned emotional response and during retention of a passive avoidance response has been studied in the rat. ACTH4-10 peptide is practically devoid of adrenocorticotropic activity but contains the behaviorally active sequence of the ACTH molecule. DG-LVP was isolated from hog pituitaries and like LVP is able to restore the deficient learning behavior of hypophysectomized rats. A number of observations suggested that resistance to extinction of conditioned avoidance responses increases when ACTH or vasopressin-like peptides are administered during the extinction period in intact rats. Administration of both ACTH4-10 and desglycinamide-lysine-8-vasopressin facilitates passive avoidance behavior. The heart rate changes that accompany this behavior are, however, differentially affected by these two peptides. It is suggested that the differential heart rate response related to emotional behavior may reflect the effect of ACTH4-10 on motivation processes while vasopressin-like peptides affect specific memory functions." @default.
