- W97359720 abstract "Horsehair worms (Nematomorpha) are long and slender worms, spending an important phase of their life cycle in inland waters of all types; where they copulate and lay numerous eggs, from which microscopically small larvae hatch. These larvae are equipped with hooks and stylets and are able to infect aquatic hosts. Usually, these hosts are paratenic hosts that transfer the encysted nematomorph larvae to terrestrial final hosts. Further development from the larvae to the macroscopic worms takes place within the final hosts. The mature worms are able to manipulate their host to approach water, where the nematomorphs emerge. Nutrients are consumed during the parasitic phase from the host's body cavity mainly through the integument. Toward the end of the parasitic phase, the worm molts and replaces the permeable cuticle by a solid, protective new cuticle. The gonads extend during development to a voluminous organ and produce large amounts of gametes. Males transfer the sperm to the posterior end of the females; fertilization is internal. Adults die after releasing their gametes. There are about 300 known species and they belong to 18 genera, some of which may not be monophyletic. Some of the genera are distributed worldwide whereas others have a more restricted distribution. For example, Gordius and Paragordius occur worldwide, while Chordodes is abundant in tropical and subtropical regions." @default.
