- W97428234 abstract "The 18th century is one of the lesser-known periods of Hungarian history; it is still regarded as a trough between the long Turkish occupation and the exciting developments of the following century. Contemporary information about conditions in Hungary was generally scanty and coloured by political events. Even a century later, would-be travellers were given confusing information: as late as 1890 Murray's Handbook gives a grim picture of conditions there, noting in particular the bad roads, springless vehicles and appalling inns1, while Baedeker finds nothing but praise for the efficient railways and excellent accommodation.2 There are some interesting and little-known accounts of travel in 18th-century Hungary from which it is possible to gain an idea of what it was like to journey through a country slowly recovering from foreign occupation, wars and neglect. The general impression is that communications were poor: roads were badly maintained and bridges were few and dangerous. Industry and trade were virtually non-existent, and although some 2000 markets were held each year, they merely served local needs. There was little inducement to travel, for this could be both difficult and perilous. This, however, is only partly true. Travel could be comparatively rapid and reasonably comfortable, though costly. There were recognised main routes, such as those established for the postal services between Buda and Gyor and between Buda and Eszek3 after the expulsion of the Turks in the late 17th century, or the three postal roads radiating from Nagyszeben4 to Brasso,5 Kolozsvar6 and Deva in Transylvania. Along these roads there were staging-posts, and horses were available primarily for the mail services, though suitably qualified travellers might apply for them to the postmasters. These latter were supposed to supply 8 horses for one stage and 10 for V/2 , but the number of horses available tended to be erratic, and in any case they were not permitted to gallop. This service was little used, for it was both expensive and" @default.
