- W974799242 abstract "This chapter discusses some of its recent advances, which primarily concern the basic component of the postsynaptic domain, the acetylcholine receptor, are presented. The acetylcholine nicotinic receptor (AChR) from vertebrate neuromuscular junction and fish electromotor synapse remains one of the best known receptors for neurotransmitters. Recent studies with nicotinic AChR from neural tissue legitimize the extension of many of the basic properties uncovered with muscle AChR (though not necessarily all of them) to brain AChR. Receptors undergo two distinct categories of allosteric transitions elicited by the neurotransmitter: (1) the fast opening of the ion channel and (2) slower conformational changes, which take place in the 0.1 s to minute time scale, leading to high affinity refractory states, referred to as “desensitized.” The development of the postsynaptic domain of the motor end-plate involves a complex sequence of events at both transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels." @default.
