- W974804751 abstract "Although at one time febrile seizures were thought to be accompanied by a risk of later cognitive impairment, the consequences of febrile seizures have now been demonstrated to be small or nonexistent. Febrile seizures occur in 2–4% of young children, are more common than any other seizure disorder of childhood, and indicate an age-related susceptibility. An earlier series that had found that a significant number of children with febrile seizures had later intellectual dysfunction did not exclude children with prior abnormalities and acute central nervous system infection at the time of the seizures. In the National Child Development Study in Great Britain—a large prospective cohort—academic performance was not impaired in children of school age who had a history of febrile convulsions. Behavioral outcomes in children who have experienced febrile seizures have not been studied as extensively as intellectual outcomes. Intermittent prophylaxis for febrile-seizure recurrences with diazepam does not appear to lead to any long-lasting effects. Behavioral outcome seems relatively benign with the exception that the children with febrile seizures tend to have more problems with sleep and may tend to be more anxious." @default.
