- W975453622 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter presents a study carried out on silver with various coverages of adsorbed sulfur. The adsorption of sulfur is obtained by means of suited treatment in H2S, H2 mixtures. This treatment is carried out before the electrode immersion in the electrolytic cell. The transfer between the treatment cell and the electrolytic cell is carried out in inert atmosphere (argon) to avoid atmospheric contamination and the electrodeposition is conducted in AgNO3 aqueous solution. The surface concentration of adsorbed sulfur is measured by a radiochemical technique based on the use of 35S by microscopical examination. At low sulfur concentrations, the surface is covered by a dilute phase of adsorbed sulfur. This phase has no significant effect on the silver deposition. At mean sulfur concentrations, there is a phase separation in the adsorbed layer with surface equilibrium between a dilute phase and a dense phase. Deposition of silver occurs only on the part of the surface covered by the dilute phase. In this manner islands or nuclei of the dense phase may be reverted. For a near complete monolayer of sulfur disperse crystallites of silver are formed on structural defects of the adsorbed layer. When bulk sulfide co-exist with near complete adsorbed layer, electrodeposition of silver occurs preferentially on the nuclei of bulk sulfide. In general, the presence of an adsorbed layer decreases the electrodeposition current. This study confirms the existence of a nucleation phenomenon in the growth of adsorbed layers." @default.
