- W975626652 abstract "This chapter discusses the homogeneous decomposition of hydrides of the elements that becomes complex when moving from right to left in the main groups of the Periodic Table. An obvious reason for this increasing complexity is the greater number of atoms per molecule concomitant with the increased valency of the central element. It deals mainly with reactions involving only one molecular reactant, the emphasis being thus on the thermally induced unimolecular reactions in the gas phase. The tendency to form element bonds is more pronounced in the third and fourth main groups, which gives rise to the appearance of a homologous series of the simple hydrides. The chapter examines that in the decomposition of higher hydrides the weaker element-element bond is preferentially cleaved. This seems to be valid for thermal pyrolysis, while the situation is not so clear-cut in photolysis. The chapter also discusses the cases where the gas-phase decomposition has been studied by classical methods using static systems the question of the degree of homogeneity of the reactions is unsolved." @default.
