- W97676603 abstract "Emulsions were used to investigate the photoproduction of mesons( pi / sup -/) from deuterium at energies close to the threshold. The gamma rays were produced from the acceleration of electrons in the Lebedeff Physical Institute synchrotron. Particles were identified visually. In all, 720 stars were identified that could be assigned to the investigated reaction gamma + d yields p + p + pi /sup -/. The reaction was studied for photon energies ranging from the threshold to 174 Mev. The angular distribution of the mesons( pi /sup -/) for photon energies of 153 to 174 Mev was found to be isotropic indicating that meson( pi /sup -/) formation took place in an Sstate. From an examination of the kinetic energies of the various particles it was concluded that the final state of the reaction is such that the nuclear interaction between the final protons is for the two particles to be in a 1S/sub O/ state. The only transition that can form an S-state sition. This means that the electric dipole absorption of the photons is responsible for the formation of mesons( pi /sup -/) up to a photon energy of 174 Mev. (TTT)" @default.
