- W976820123 abstract "Ataxia is incoordination or clumsiness of movement that is not the result of muscle weakness. It is caused by cerebellar, vestibular, or proprioceptive sensory (large fiber/posterior column) dysfunction. This chapter focuses on acquired disorders causing cerebellar-mediated ataxic symptoms. Lesions of the cerebellum, its afferent connections, or efferent connections in the cerebellar peduncles, red nucleus, pons, medulla, or spinal cord produce cerebellar ataxia. The anatomic, physiologic, and chemical complexities of the cerebellum provide multiple avenues for disruption of normal functioning by a variety of agents and insults. The intracerebellar neuronal network receives sensory input and feedback information from the rest of the neuraxis and projects from the deep cerebellar nuclei to all components of the voluntary and postural motor systems, except the basal ganglia. The presence of a known genetic disorder does not rule out the presence of additional acquired insults that might alter the presentation and course of the symptoms of ataxia and warrant further investigation. Similarly, the absence of a clear family history does not rule out the role of genetic factors in an apparently sporadic disorder." @default.
