- W977634539 abstract "Publisher Summary The Enzymes II (E-IIs) of the phosphoenolpyruvate (P-enolpyruvate)-dependent phosphotransferase system (PTS) are carbohydrate transporters found only in prokaryotes. They transport hexoses, hexitols, pentitols, and disaccharides. Carbohydrate transport occurs at the expense of P-enolpyruvate, concomitant with phosphorylation. The entire process is characterized by a number of phospho-enzyme intermediates. The structural genes of seventeen E-IIs and E-IIIs have been sequenced. Sequence homology among all of the proteins is very small; however, if the proteins are divided into families, more homology is evident. Sequence data, in combination with functional studies, reveal several classes of E-IIs. These classes will most likely change and expand as future studies define additional domains with new functions. The first class is represented by Escherichia coli II Cel . This protein is unique because it is the only representative of its class. It consists only of a single hydrophobic peptide with no hydrophilic domain attached at either end." @default.
