- W978046285 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the estimates of the carcinogenic effects of low-dose-rate protracted irradiation; they are the most important risk estimates in relation to radiation protection standards. The estimation of the risks of the carcinogenic effect of high-LET radiations depends on experimental data. There are two points of importance in the design of the experiments that involve protracted exposures: (1) total dose should be kept low because at total doses greater than about 3 Gy, the response per unit dose tends to increase; and (2) the age range over which the exposures are spread is important because of the marked changes in age-dependent changes in susceptibility, which in turn are tissue specific. The impact per unit dose of low doses of radiation and protracted irradiation is less than that of high doses and high-dose-rate exposures, not only because the probability of high cancer occurrence is less but also because the relative incidence of various tumor types and the nature of the induced tumors are different." @default.
