- W97948370 abstract "Rome's interest in the Hellenistic world grew from the late 3rd century BCE and by the end of the 1st century CE the Eastern Mediterranean was flourishing under Rome's somewhat laissez-faire attitude to her provinces. Rome's Eastern Empire grew in a variety of ways; as a consequence of wars, inheritance, economic needs, or strategic planning, and thus from their foundation, a shadow of diversity permeated throughout the provinces. With the urban network already in place, much of Rome's attentions were focused, through the conduit of the elites, on improving and maintaining the established infrastructure to facilitate the efficient collection of tax. Rome largely left the control of the provinces to others, unless there was particularly vehement opposition to her rule, and as such, little evidence of forced cultural change can be identified. Because variety thrived there are few identifiable models, so to understand the nature of the Eastern Roman Empire it is necessary to examine a broad cross section of provinces, cities and systems using a range of theoretical and practical approaches. The Roman East can be best understood through an examination of the archaeology in combination with the historical data to allow consideration of the perspective of the local population in addition to that of the Roman. As such this approach allows for a more inclusive understanding of the cultural change in the Eastern Mediterranean with the growth of the Roman Empire." @default.
