- W980716398 abstract "The symptoms of Alzheimer's generally become apparent in dealings with the outside world. Metabolic Syndrome exacerbates and accelerates the progression of Alzheimer's. The risk of developing Alzheimer's disease is nearly doubled in people with adult onset diabetes in comparison with those without this condition1. Generally, adult onset diabetes, which is Diabetes Type II, arrives at the end of years of suffering Metabolic Syndrome. Insulin is important for a variety of brain activities, such as control of food intake, weight regulation, and energy metabolism. Insulin receptors in the hypothalamus mediate these effects. The olfactory bulbs are areas of the brain rich in insulin receptors. Some of the nerve fibers sent out from the olfactory bulbs end up in the hippocampus13. The hippocampus plays an important role in learning and memory. Intranasal administration of insulin has been found to enhance memory in humans. Lack of insulin causes deficits in cognitive function, then the resistance to insulin seen in Metabolic Syndrome might be expected to diminish cognition by blunting the effects of insulin in the brain. The compensatory increases in insulin levels that occur in Metabolic Syndrome may also cause damage to the brain. Inflammation is another process in the brain that contributes to the initiation and progression of Alzheimer's disease. Metabolic Syndrome increases the risk and accelerates the progression of Alzheimer's disease. To reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease, Metabolic Syndrome must be controlled." @default.
