- W98092046 abstract "This somewhat useful book about dog and cat nutrition is divided into 3 major sections: “Basics of Nutrition,” a brief overview of nutrient fundamentals; “Nutritional Requirements of Dogs and Cats,” that discusses the various types of diets available; and “Feeding Management for Dogs and Cats,” that addresses the practicalities of feeding. The book is readable and understandable; each chapter is divided into small, comprehensible sections. The history, regulation, and labeling discussions are mainly confined to the US market, but are interesting and relevant to Canadians. The author includes a marvellous example of a cat food can label: “Dr K’s Natural Food: Field Mouse for Cats.” Her assessment of pet foods is objective. For example, “Most grocery store and generic brands are formulated as variable formula diets.” and, “Unfortunately, there is no way to determine quality from the ingredient list.”sIn the discussion of types of pet foods, Wortinger reveals many interesting and little known facts such as: “the loss of nutrients, particularly vitamins, through processing is limited because the baking or extrusion processes (for dry foods) do not require excessive temperature or time...” Many owners assume that the “meaty chunks” found in the (canned) food are indeed meat; more commonly, these chunks are textured soy products (TSP), similar to tofu. Snacks and treats: “A large proportion of this cost is due to the larger amount of money directed towards marketing.”The discussion about raw foods contains valid information about bacterial and parasitic infection, but is incorrect and inadequate with regard to nutritional value and health benefits. Most importantly, she recommends, “do not ostracize these clients, educate them.” The discussion on homemade diets provides relevant background material, but no usable guidelines or recipes. Supplementation of calcium, various forms and amounts, is omitted altogether. The 3rd section, feeding management for dogs and cats is solely about feeding commercial pet foods. Her recommendations for feeding the different life stages are valid, if vague. For example: “Dietary protein should not be reduced in apparently healthy older dogs and cats. Adequate protein and energy intake are needed to sustain lean body mass, protein synthesis, and immune function.”One of my criteria for assessing books about pet nutrition is whether the author treats cats as biologically unique or as small dogs. This author recognizes that domestic cats are descended from desert, meat-eating ancestors; she discusses their high protein and taurine requirements. Only in the last section does she describe cats’ carbohydrate intolerance and their unique digestion. However, she does not include the problems that may cause or make specific recommendations.Although Wortinger’s facts and discussion are accurate, she does not go on to describe the problems caused and the solutions required. For example: “With this decreased response to thirst, cats may ignore minor levels of dehydration (up to 4% body weight).” Omitted are the consequences of crystalluria and constipation, and the easy solution of feeding water-diluted pate canned food.I found this book somewhat informative, but inadequate for veterinarians and technologists. Like an appetizer, it was pleasant but left me wanting sustenance in the form of consequences, solutions, and recommendations for my clients: which foods, how much (not just formulas), recipes, and tip sheets." @default.
