• W981743117 abstract "Habitat characterisation and use of the European river otter Lutra lutra (Linne, 1758) in a typical Mediterranean river Between 1996 and 1997 a study was carried out on the ecology of the otter in the river Bergantes (the river Ebro basin). This river has typically Mediterranean characteristics, with heavy oscillations in the water level which provoke great seasonal changes. Three individuals were captured (two females and one male) and were implanted intraperitoneally with transmitters and tracked during 110, 111 y 117 days between November 1996 and August 1997. This tracking allowed us to obtain a total of 1320 locations in a stretch of some 40 km. Data was obtained on home ranges, patterns of activity, use of space and resting sites. In a parallel way, the fluvial habitat was studied, dividing the study area into 100 m stretches, with the aim of establishing the animals preferences in each type of habitat. Calculations were made for type of vegetation Galemys 10 (no especial), 1998 176 cover, availability of water, locations, number and surface of pools, use of ground, etc. At the same time, electrofishing was carried out in order to establish the availability of food and diversity of fish species. By means of multivariate analysis, relationships were established which described behaviour in the use of space. A high selection of those areas where natural conditions were best conserved was observed, along with a negative selection of the most altered areas. Of the factors which were important for selection, vegetation development, presence of pools and availability of food stand out. These results allowed for an adequate management of these areas and efficient conservation of the species." @default.
