- W982679562 abstract "Research in the serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) field, particularly in the central nervous system (CNS) is under active investigation and has gradually intensified. This is mainly because of the development of new, selective compounds, both agonists and antagonists, which bind to the different subtypes of 5-HT receptors. Most of this development has been focused on the CNS. This chapter describes the compounds acting at the 5-HT receptors. The clinical trials with 5-HT1A receptor agonists with different degrees of intrinsic efficacies and with 5-HT3 antagonists is likely to give useful feedback to the medicinal chemists and pharmacologists for further improvements and for the development of selective and more potent ligands. Particularly, clinical results in depression and anxiety are crucial as the predictive value of the animal behavioral models seem to be very low in that area. 5-HT1A agonists, with a high degree of intrinsic efficacy, induce the so called 5-HT behavioral syndrome in rat. The syndrome consists of a flat body posture, abducted hind and forelegs, reciprocal forepaw treading, head weaving, and tremor. However, interesting species differences exist with regard to this syndrome." @default.
