- W982690059 abstract "The measurement of proliferation on cytological samples presents a number of advantages. Fine-needle cytopunctures can be obtained from patients at any stage of the disease, including inoperable tumors. Information obtained at the time of diagnosis can be useful for therapeutic decision making. The procedure is easily performed, allows rapid interpretation, and is highly accurate in the hands of a skilled and proficient cytopathologist. The cytologic samples are particularly well suited for flow cytometry (FCM)-DNA analyses in that isolated cells are easily obtained without time consuming tissue disruption. Even though cells can be obtained by fine-needle cytopuncture from nonpalpable lesions throughout the body under special guidance (ultrasound, stereotaxic mammography, computed tomography) and submitted to FCM-DNA analysis with good results, the technique is usually applied to palpable lesions. Samples can be obtained from palpable lesions by fine-needle aspirations (FNA), but the fine-needle cytopuncture technique is preferred without aspiration, that is simpler and provides samples of better quality than FNA." @default.
