- W984759309 abstract "The finding that the digitalis-induced stimulation of the force of contraction of the normal heart is not translated into an increase in cardiac output, suggests possible extracardiac vascular effects of the glycosides. A substantial body of evidence has now been accumulated to indicate that the actions of the digitalis glycosides are not limited to the heart. Indeed, it was at one time postulated that the primary action of digitalis was extracardiac and that the direct effects on the vascular bed were responsible, in part, for its therapeutic action (Dock and Tainter, 1930; Katz et al., 1938; McMichael and Sharpey-Schafer, 1944; Lendle and Mercker, 1961). Further, it has been shown that the contractile response of excised arterial and venous strips is enhanced in the presence of digitalis (Brender et al., 1969; Cow, 1911; Franklin, 1925; Leonard, 1957). More recently, considerable attention has been devoted to the clarification of the actions of digitalis on the peripheral vasculature both in animals and in humans. It is the purpose of this chapter to review these investigations in order to define the alterations produced by the drug on the resistance vessels (systemic arterioles) and on the capacitance beds (systemic veins) of the peripheral circulation.KeywordsCardiac OutputVenous PressureVenous ReturnCardiac GlycosideForearm Blood FlowThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
