- W984857390 abstract "Research in early detection of schizophrenia is usually concerned with specific risk factors, which are the basis for the evaluation of the actual risk of psychotic transitions in people in an `at risk mental state’. Research in factors protecting against the risk of developing psychosis is somewhat neglected, although the focus on protective factors allows a more positive view compared to the exclusive view on risk factors. In fact, one can always assume a set of risk and of protective factors acting simultaneously, and the more and especially important protectors are, the more they are able to balance risk factors and to reduce the probability of a psychotic transition. It is possible to distinguish biological and social risk factors, or protective factors. Many risk factors are of a biological nature, like familial load, obstetric and birth complications, delayed and disturbed developmental processes during early childhood, but also some are protective like estrogen in women. There are also social risks like stressful life events, and social protective factors like adequate coping strategies for mental problems, or stable relationships with family members, partners or friends. The following analysis is based on the working hypothesis that social factors like coping, social network and social support are protective factors, reducing the risk of onset, and having some positive impact on the further development and course of schizophrenia." @default.
