- W98599166 abstract "Traditional porous asphalts are not able to withstand the high tangential shear generated by Formula 1 racing cars. They are not used for this purpose because they deteriorate very rapidly as a result of aggregate stripping. Nevertheless, their high drainage capacity would mean that water would disappear rapidly from the surface, reducing the splash and spray produced by cars. These properties would help improve driver safety and visibility in wet conditions. This paper presents a new porous asphalt mix design procedure which provides both excellent drainage capacity and resistance to shear stresses which is as high as the best bituminous concretes which are generally used for the surfacings of Formula 1 racing tracks such as Magny-Cours in France. The mix design procedure has enabled us to specify and select the optimum granular composition for long-term high drainage capacity. A high elastomer content modified binder provides the good cohesion and high resistance to shear that are required of such mixes. The binder in question also provides excellent performance at high and low service temperatures. This paper describes the composition of the porous asphalts and their laboratory performance; the principal characteristics of the binder; and the trial areas that were constructed on a French racing track and how these behaved as regards drainage capacity and shear resistance after a full year of use. For the covering abstract see ITRD E121480." @default.
