- W986421684 abstract "This chapter summarizes the recent work concerned with the effects various ions have on the rate of ouabain binding to the red cell membrane. These types of effects help define the determinants of ouabain interaction with its receptor and the relation this binding bears to the transport function of the pump. The influences that external Na and external Ca has on ouabain binding as controlled by internal Mg is also considered in the chapter. In addition, the paradoxical relation between the ouabain binding rate and pump activation by internal Na as influenced by internal K is analyzed. It has been shown that ouabain binding to the outside of the membrane is antagonized by KO; NaO can reduce the affinity of the pump for KO, resulting in a stimulation of the binding rate of ouabain. The interaction of NaO with the outside of the pump is complex, evidently requiring atleast two Na sites. In addition, ouabain binding is also stimulated by CaO and MgO but these ions do not act by changing the pump's affinity for KO." @default.
