- W98660436 abstract "A phenomenon named “antigen trapping” in the spleen and lymph nodes of mammals has been described. It involves the accumulation of antibody complexed antigens in the follicles of these lymphoid organs. “Antigen trapping” starts immediately after injection of antigen-antibody complexes, or as soon as these complexes have been formed from antigen injected in the animal and antibodies produced during the immune response against it. The phenomenon may have functional implications both for the development of immunological memory and for the feedback inhibition of the immune response, and is, in the spleen of mammals, restricted to the follicles. A similar phenomenon in the germinal centres of the spleen of birds has been described, although the mechanism of “antigen trapping” in the spleen of mammals and birds seems to differ. Follicles have not been described in the spleens of amphibians, reptiles and fishes. The white pulp is not subdivided in periarteriolar lymphocyte sheaths (PALS) and follicles in these animals. Nevertheless a phenomenon resembling “antigen trapping” in mammals has been described for some of these lower vertebrates, whereas a form of immunological memory has been demonstrated also. In the present contribution the phenomenon of “antigen trapping” in the spleen of mammals will be described and compared with the results obtained in lower vertebrates until now." @default.
