- W98692251 abstract "Separate, relatively small disciplines have to define their particular “niche” in the societal debate on sustainable development because if they donot, they are bound to get lost in broad discussions covering interrelated and complex environmental, social, and economic aspects of sustainable development. Pedology and soil physics/hydrology have reached a development phase where an integrated approach to land and water management as proposed in hydropedology is more productive than continuing on two monodisciplinary tracks. Modern developments in the relation between science and society require transdisciplinarity including interaction with various stakeholders and policymakers. The recent Soil Protection Strategy of the European Union is used as a guide to define hydropedologic “niches” for research in terms of seven soil functions. In doing so, attention should be paid to: (i) the policy cycle, ranging from signaling a problem to evaluating research results; (ii) the “knowledgechain”, ranging fromK1(tacit knowledge) toK5 (cutting-edge science) and back, and (iii) a systems analysis in space and time, defining various options for sustainable land use. Hydropedology research is needed on water regimes in undisturbed soils in the field and inwatersheds, using an array of newmonitoring andmodeling technologies that do not implicitly assume soils to be isotropic and homogeneous." @default.
