- W987443829 abstract "This chapter emphasizes on peritoneal lesions associated with ovarian neoplasms. The chapter particularly focuses on benign and malignant lesions. Benign lesion is defined as the presence of endometrial epithelium, stroma, and blood vessels in an ectopic location, outside the uterine body. Ovarian endometriosis is the most common ectopic site. Endometriosis is found in women of reproductive age and is often presented with infertility or delayed pregnancy. Another type of benign lesion is the endosalpingiosis lesion which is characterized by the presence of benign tubular structures resembling mullerian epithelium, throughout the pelvic and abdominal cavity. Endosalpingiosis generally represents a multifocal metaplastic process arising from the peritoneal mesothelium. Furthermore, malignant mesothelioma originates in peritoneal mesothelium and is rather an uncommon neoplasm, affecting mostly male patients, with a proven etiopathogenic association with asbestos exposure, and involving the pleural and peritoneal cavities. Second look operations for ovarian cancer are performed with the purpose of identifying minimal or microscopic disease after chemotherapy in order to re-treat those patients." @default.
