- W987519169 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter presents the mechanism of acidifying action in excitable cells and the properties of palytoxin. Palytoxin is one of the most potent toxins known. It has been isolated from marine coelenterate and consists of a long, aliphatic, partially unsaturated chain with interspersed cyclic ether, hydroxyl, and carboxyl groups. PTX depolarizes excitable cells—including neuronal cells, cardiac cells, skeletal muscle cells, and vascular smooth muscle cell—in a manner that is dependent on extracellular Na + and that is insensitive to tetrodotoxin. Toxicity is mainly due to a profound vasoconstrictor effect via a direct action on smooth muscle cells and via the release of norepinephrine by sympathetic nerve terminals. The chapter also describes an experiment in which cultured cells plated into 24-well tissue culture clusters are used to estimate the action of palytoxin on 22 Na + uptake." @default.
