- W987953512 abstract "This chapter reviews the vibrational properties of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). Vibrational spectra are used to develop an understanding of chemical bonding in solids. More specifically, the frequency of the various atomic (or lattice) motions is a basic property of materials. For example, the presence of quantized vibrational modes is directly related to heat capacity. For crystalline silicon, the present understanding of silicon–silicon and silicon–impurity bonds has evolved from studies of vibrational spectra. The studies of the vibrational properties of a-Si:H are at an experimental stage. For example, the role of phonon modes in a-Si:H materials is of importance since many energy transfer processes depend on these modes. The role of phonons in the photoluminescence of a-Si:H has been discussed. The types of instrumentation for infrared spectroscopy are described; the vibrational frequencies for the a-Si structure containing hydrogen, fluorine, carbon, boron, phosphorus, or nitrogen are summarized; and the relation between these data and hydrogen bonding in a-Si:H is reviewed in the chapter." @default.
