- W988098179 abstract "Publisher Summary The chapter focuses on the hierarchies of function within the individual columnar absorbing cell of the intestinal mucosa. It discusses the possible routes whereby substrate molecules can traverse a cell, the boundaries of which are limited by a plasma membrane and the interior filled with cytoplasm (cytosol) in which the organelles, possessing various degrees of permeability, are immersed. Transcellular transport is a consequence of the sequential operation of one or more of at least five different modes of movement. These five fundamental modes of transport are: (1) extracellular transcellular movement through tubular systems piercing the cell; (2) combination with a membrane that flows; (3) entrainment within a vesicle bounded by flowing membrane; (4) movement across the membrane, either by simple diffusion or by chemical combination with specific channels located within and traversing the membrane (membrane transport); and (5) transcytoplasmic movement. ." @default.
