- W988751412 abstract "Sphingolipids are derivatives of the sphingoid base (long-chain D- erythro -2-amino-l,3-diol). Generally a fatty acid is attached to the sphingoid base through an amide linkage. A fatty acid amide of the sphingoid base is termed as a “ceramide” and constitutes the basic structure of most sphingolipids. In these lipids, either a mono- or oligosaccharide, one of their derivatives, or a phosphorylcholine is attached to the C-1 position. Sphingolipids without a fatty acid are known as “lysosphingolipids.” Numerous glycosphingolipids occur in nature, either as cell membrane constituents or as intermediates in the biosynthesis and degradation of other glycosphingolipids. Many glycosphingolipids also occur as cell components. These lipids generally contain either a much longer hexose chain, including fucose or mannose, or a commonly occurring carbohydrate, often with branches. Sphingolipids are ubiquitous in cell membranes, and it has been assumed that they play a vital role in the function of the cell. They occur in especially high concentrations in the multilamellar layer of the myelin sheath, whose sole function appears to be to facilitate saltatory nerve conduction by wrapping the axons. Sphingolipids in plants and yeast, and occasionally in higher animals, contain phytosphingosine." @default.
