- W989071763 abstract "Publisher Summary The Petri net is a mathematical model that is widely adopted to study the behaviors of conditional systems including rule-based expert systems (RBSs). This chapter presents the techniques and applications of Petri nets in knowledge verification and validation of RBSs. The presentation begins with a discussion on the properties of RBSs and the related issues in modeling RBSs. Traditional Petri nets are used to model RBSs containing explicitly described knowledge. This chapter discusses an extended model called “enhanced high-level Petri nets” (EHLPNs) to model RBSs containing implicitly described knowledge. With such a model, tasks of knowledge verification and validation of RBSs are transformed into reachability problems and verification and validation are performed by solving the reachability problems. This chapter introduces two techniques for solving the reachability problems of EHLPNs. The first is a matrix-based approach that verifies the patterns of reachability problems by simple matrix operations. The second is a theorem-proving approach that proves the correctness of formed reachability problems by logic deduction. Examples that demonstrate the effectiveness of both approaches are discussed in the chapter." @default.
