- W989600484 abstract "The development of anesthesia and the subsequent attention paid to the concepts of infection control by the use of asepsis and antisepsis have led to advances in surgical therapy. Nevertheless, postoperative infections continue to be major sources of morbidity in obstetric and gynecologic patients. Most physicians and all operating room supervisors consider that careful tissue handling and control of microbial contamination can minimize infection and reduce the morbidity and mortality related to sepsis. However, these are not the sole influences on morbidity. The patient acquires a modified nasopharyngeal and cutaneous microbial flora that reflects the hospital environment, particularly evidenced by the presence of gram-negative bacteria. The acquisition of pathogenic bacteria from other patients in open wards has been shown by Davidson and associates1 to increase the incidence of postoperative wound infections. It is also well known that longer hospitalization prior to surgery increases the risk of postoperative wound infection." @default.
