- W991891683 abstract "The period of cytogenesis of the central nervous system (CNS) in birds and mammals can be divided into three stages. During stage I of cytogenesis, the wall of the neural tube is composed of a pseudostratified columnar epithelium that proliferates steadily to increase in area and thickness. Cells constituting the epithelium are homogeneous in morphology and behavior and are called “matrix cells.” In stage II of cytogenesis—that is, the stage of neuron production, some of the matrix cells become determined at the early G1 phase and differentiate into neuroblasts. Immediately after determination, they lose the potency for DNA replication and detach from the ventricular surface to migrate into the outermost part of the neural tube to form the mantle layer. The analysis of neuron production has made it clear that there is always a fixed end to neuron production by matrix cells in every part of the CNS—that is, the end of stage II. Thereafter, only neuroglial cells are produced. The matrix cells change, via transitory intermediate forms, known as “ependymoglioblasts,” into ependymal cells and glioblasts. This is stage III, or the stage of neuroglia production. To understand the sequential nature of the differentiative behavior of matrix cells, this chapter proposes a hypothesis of major differentiation of matrix cells, which postulates that during neurogenesis the matrix cells undergo progressive gene inactivation." @default.
