- W9923557 abstract "The fuel used for the propulsion of rockets in space flights, for example ARIANE 5 operated by the European Space Agency, contains dinitrogen tetroxide (N204 ). At the upper stage of flight, nucleation has been observed near the throat of the exit nozzle, as the residual fuel is discharged from ARIANE 5. The phenomenon is similar to the nucleation of supersaturated vapor in supersonic nozzle experiments performed in the terrestrial laboratories. This chapter presents a simple molecular cluster model to examine the nucleation process of N204 fuel of ARIANE 5 (ESA) at its upper stage of flight. The free energy of these discrete microclusters has been calculated in the size range 3 ≤ n ≤ 115. The resultant nucleation rates are presented for comparison with experiments. With a view to understanding the process involved with the N204 spray, the chapter examines the physical behavior immediately preceding actual nucleation from a purely molecular point of view. Nucleation is characterized by the formation of an ensemble of clusters giving a flee energy profile as a function of their size. The surrounding temperature and pressure then trigger the catastrophic breakdown of the supersaturated phase leading to homogeneous nucleation." @default.
