- W993039161 abstract "The best-studied neurotransmitter in the lateral synaptic pathway is gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). At least in ectotherms, GABA is used by the subpopulations of horizontal cells (HCs) and amacrine cells as their neurotransmitter and it exerts postsynaptic actions on cones, bipolar cells, and ganglion cells. This chapter reviews some of the studies concerning GABA-releasing (GABAergic) synapses in ectotherm retinas. These studies not only help with the understanding of the way GABAergic synapses work but also provide important information on the way lateral synapses (GABAergic or not) function and the way the center-surround antagonistic receptive fields are formed in the retina. In the ectotherm retina, GABA is used by the populations of HCs as their neurotransmitter. HC outputs are probably mediated by the HC–cone feedback synapse and the HC-bipolar cell feedforward synapse. The chapter focuses on two ectotherms, the tiger salamander and the teleost fish, with emphasis on basic synaptic mechanisms in the former and the circuitry mediating color-information processing in the latter." @default.
