- W994020038 abstract "This chapter discusses basic microbiology, origin and taxonomy, metabolism and physiology, clinical features, pathogenicity and virulence, treatment, survival in the environment, methods of detection, epidemiology of waterborne outbreaks, and finally, risk assessment of heterotrophic plate count (HPC) bacteria such as Flavobacterium, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, Serratia, and Staphylococcus. Studies have shown that there is no relationship between gastrointestinal illness and HPC bacteria in drinking water. Certain Flavobacterium species are associated with nosocomial infections, including meningitis, pneumonia, endocarditis and septicaemia. Klebsiella are a common cause of urinary tract infections. They are occasionally associated with bacteraemia often with a high mortality rate and are a major cause of nosocomial infections. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an important organism associated with a wide range of infections. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the major cause of hospital-acquired infections in the very ill. Infections can lead to sepsis, pneumonia, pharyngitis, and other problems. Moreover, Serratia spp., Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis and S. saprophyticus are opportunistic pathogens." @default.
