- W994036840 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter provides a brief overview of the problem of acetylcholine (Ach) receptor topography at the neuromuscular junction and discusses possible mechanisms for the development and stabilization of this topography. It discusses the fluidity of the cell membrane and the speed with which membrane proteins may diffuse laterally in the membrane. Many of the proposed mechanisms depend directly or indirectly on the lateral mobility of proteins in the cell membrane. The strengths and weaknesses of the various models and some experimental approaches to test them are discussed. The chapter also discusses two of the models, the diffusion-trap model and the electromigration model, that can explain a rather wide range of the data and require little of the cell machinery. The cell can merely insert the ACh receptor at random and the ACh receptor is then localized by the physics of the membrane. Thus, a complete description of these models is possible based upon the properties of the membrane alone. The chapter discusses some possible functional consequences of the dynamics of the cell membrane as it pertains to the plasticity of synaptic function." @default.
