- W994429134 abstract "This chapter focuses on electron emission microscopy, which is characterized by the fact that the imaging electrons are emitted by the specimen itself, and the concepts “cathode” and “specimen” have identical meaning. The first electron emission images were taken by Goldstein in 1878 with a very simple experimental arrangement. These images were however, not focused, and had a magnification of the order of unity. Diffraction effects set a fundamental limit to an arbitrary reduction of resolving power by using correspondingly narrow apertures. Spivak and his coworkers observed the domain structures of poly and monocrystalline cobalt in a photoemission microscope of very simple construction. Recent, hitherto unpublished results by Decker show that a carbon layer about 50 A in thickness, evaporated on a nonconducting surface by means of Bradley's procedure, removes the surface charges and allows to distinguish different materials by their specific secondary emission. A very interesting application of the thermionic emission microscope is the observation of transformations in metals and alloys." @default.
