- W99551486 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter presents reflections on the evolutionary transition from prokaryotes to eukaryotes. Because evolution in the stationary plants was relatively slow, only animal evolution is considered in the following discussion. It is pointed out that the eventual fast acceleration after a long induction period must be rooted in the drastic transformation of a prokaryote into a eukaryote cell type. A reconstruction lies within experimentally accessible domains because both the prokaryotes and the eukaryotes are easily available for study. Yet only recently has evidence built up to enable one to begin to understand the insularity of the energy-transducing organelles within the eukaryote cell. Earlier, when studying homogenates of E. coli and liver, Ochoa and Rendi and Nathans and Lipmann simultaneously showed that the respective ribosomes were not cross-complemented by their supernatant factors. There is great use of photosynthesizing implementation of eukaryotes, predominantly in the fungi and represented by the great variety of lichens and in aquatic polycellulars; the latter generally develop in families called Viridans ." @default.
