- W99560432 abstract "The neuronal connections of the basal ganglia and related nuclei have been studied extensively. The sensorimotor cortex projects to the neostriatum and the subthalamic nucleus. Because extensive anatomical and physiological studies on the cortico-striatal projection has been presented at the International Basal Ganglia Meeting at Giens, France, I will not discuss details on this projection. The subthalamic nucleus is a relatively small nucleus and is located ventrally to the zona incerta and dorsally to the cerebral peduncle. The subthalamic nucleus contains dense medium size neurons having a radiating, sparsely spined dendrites (Kita et al., 1983b; Chang et al., 1983). Both the neostriatum and the subthalamic nucleus project to the basal ganglia output nuclei, the entopeduncular nucleus (homologous to the internal segment of the pallidum in primates) and the substantia nigra pars reticulata. The output of the neostriatum is inhibitory while the subthalamic nucleus is excitatory. Thus, the signals arise in the sensorimotor cortex can be transmitted to the basal ganglia output nuclei via two parallel pathways having opposite output signals (i.e., excitatory vs. inhibitory)." @default.
