- W995722503 abstract "In the physiologic state, nitric oxide (NO) appears to be integral to a variety of essential biological functions including neurotransmission, platelet-vessel wall interactions, vasomotor regulation, and immune cell function. In pathophysiologic conditions, however, NO contributes to inflammation caused by neutrophils and macrophages in local infection and to the severe vasodilatation of septic shock. The known role of NO in the heart is evolving. Recent evidence suggests that NO may play a substantial part in physiologic regulation of cardiac contractility. In sepsis and other forms of inflammatory myocardial injury (including reperfusion injury and myocarditis), physiologic control of NO generation in the heart appears to give way to pathophysiologic NO production with concomitant abnormalities of cardiac metabolism and function." @default.
