Contrary to the traditional positive as well as negative views of the classical hero, these contemporary portrayals do not focus on his exemplary heroic qualities as depicted by Homer, nor do they display his dark and deceitful aspects as revealed in the works of Dictys, Dares, or Eugammon/ Ulysses is not flawed by a self-destructive inherited curse as is Wyspia?ski's hero; neither does he compete with the ironic distortion of P?rez de Ayala's Marco de Seti?ano, nor does he exemplify the archetypal Great Warrior of Buero Vallejo who slays the suitors and repossesses his kingdom/ Instead, as this study will demonstrate, Torrente Ballester and Gala demythify Ulysses and portray him, first and foremost, as a man stripped of majestic stature, heroic feats, violence and vengeful acts. The Spanish dramatists concentrate on the psychological realism of the man who has inner needs, doubts, and anxieties, and who at the end of his periplus is conscious of his own aging and yearns for home.
