- W996989636 abstract "The qualitative and quantitative data highlight the multiple and intersecting pre-intervention environmental, social and psychological factors that affect families in this study. Financial and housing deprivation permeates all aspects of the families’ lives, creating numerous interconnected stressors. A lack of formal and informal social support was prevalent amongst families that exacerbated parenting difficulties. Family violence and substance abuse was endemic among families entering care. Just over half of the study children returned home during the period. Post-intervention, overall parental capabilities, family interactions, family safety improved significantly. Overall caregiver/child ambivalence findings were mixed depending on the severity of the problem. The study findings highlight the need for a re-prioritisation of resources to support expedient reunification, with a greater focus on the vulnerability of young children, and structural interventions to reduce entrenched disadvantage and risk of significant harm. The findings show how the fostering of positive relationships is the cornerstone of effective reunification practices. Research has a critical role to play in more clearly conceptualising and helping delineate reunification as a distinct domain of social work practice." @default.
