- W997527254 abstract "This chapter presents studies that involved both quantum yield measurements of retinal isomer formations and direct kinetic measurements of photoisomerizations. The studies follow two paths: (1) the study of retinal analogs themselves to work out details of the isomerization mechanism, and (2) the study of natural and synthetic visual pigments to determine the role of isomerization and other processes in the bleaching mechanism. Earliest studies of the photoisomerization of retinal, the absorption spectra of all trans-,9-cis-, 11-cis-, and 13-cis- retinals. Then, after irradiating solutions of these isomers to various degrees, they measured the spectra of the resultant isomer mixtures. The mixture spectra could then be analyzed in terms of the spectra of the component isomers. In this way quantum yields for the photoisomerization of the various isomers are determined. Photoisomerization yield studies are extended using laser excitation, high-performance liquid chromatography, and conventional excitation for the photoisomerization experiments." @default.
