- W99831475 abstract "This chapter discusses genetic lesions of the Leydig tissue. The endocrine apparatus of the testis comprises both structure and function. The structure is based on the Leydig cell; the function consists of a complex process of hormonal biosynthesis. The representative Leydig cell is morphologically well characterized. Microscopically, it appears as a big cell, round or polyhedral, with abundant cytoplasm and rich in lipoid droplets, pigmentation granules, and crystalloids. The nucleus is placed eccentrically, has a spheroidal form, is poor in chromatin, and has a voluminous nucleolus. The Leydig cells are scattered among the seminiferous tubules forming piles or cords. Sometimes they are in isolation and are gathered around the sinusoidal capillaries with which they form a close relationship. The Leydig cells have a characteristic ultrastructure, consisting of anatomizing tubules and numerous vesicles. The testicular dysgeneses, genetic aberrations of the testis, show directly or indirectly detectable lesions of the Leydig tissue. Because of the morphogenesis of the Leydig tissue and its functional subordination to the hypothalamo-hypophyseal system, dysgenesis can occur directly through a disorder existing in its own structural elements or indirectly because of a lesion existing outside it." @default.
