- W99859559 abstract "By fostering stronger cooperation between the public sector and its citizens, the internet has been proposed by many as a revolution for political participation. “Open innovation” and “crowdsourcing” platforms are more and more common in the private sector, however the usage of external knowledge in the public sector is still in its infancy. In order to foster the diffusion of “open government” initiatives in the public sector, it is necessary to understand why citizens engage. There still persists a lack of literature on the topic of citizen engagement in open government initiatives in the public sector. In this work reasons for participation were derived from the free/libre open source software (FLOSS) and crowdsourcing literature and tested in the context of open government. The results of a survey with 168 participants revealed that people differentiate between different types of open government projects, whereas socio-economic characteristics appear to have no influence on the willingness to participate in open government projects; the motivational reasons to participate differ depending on the type of open government project." @default.
